Establish a baseline you can repeat
Before increasing challenge, find a version you can perform with similar technique across several opportunities. Record only what helps comparison: the task, approximate effort, whether technique changed near the end and how you functioned later.
One unusually good day is not a new baseline, and one poor day is not the loss of all progress. Look for a repeatable pattern rather than a record.
Choose one variable you can observe
One change creates a readable experiment. If you add resistance, repetitions, a day and complexity together, you cannot tell which part helped or exceeded current capacity.
Choose the variable by the goal, not by what is easiest to count. Technical precision at the same range can be progress in skill learning; walking may progress through a longer calm segment; resistance work may use more load or quality repetitions only while the baseline remains stable.

Keep the change when quality and response remain manageable. Reduce the last change when technique breaks down, fatigue accumulates or ordinary life stays markedly limited. Do not add another variable to hide the problem.
Sometimes holding or reducing is the right step
Sleep, illness, travel, stress and other activity affect daily readiness. Holding the same version can be an active decision rather than stagnation. After a break or unusual response, return to a smaller baseline.
Sharp pain, chest pressure, fainting, sudden weakness, marked breathlessness or a new serious symptom is not a cue for online autoregulation. Stop and seek appropriate help. Chronic conditions, rehabilitation or uncertainty about load need individual assessment.
Progress can be more technical, not simply bigger
How the principle appears in Tai Chi
In Tai Chi, progress does not have to mean a deeper stance or longer form. It may be clearer weight transfer, calmer connection between parts or the same movement with less unnecessary tension.
Live correction helps decide whether to add detail or hold the baseline. Tai Chi is one movement practice, not a replacement for a complete strength and aerobic programme or medical treatment.
