The short answer
To shift weight in Tai Chi, first establish a comfortable stance, then move the pelvis and trunk calmly as one unit over the supporting leg. The other leg should become light before it steps. Keep the feet in full contact with the ground, let the knees follow the direction of the toes and use only a range from which you can return without hesitation. Begin without stepping beside a firm support, and add the arms only when you can clearly feel which leg is carrying your weight.
First separate the supporting leg from the free leg
Stand a little wider than an everyday stance, let the feet point naturally and keep the knees soft. Do not try to sink low immediately. What matters is finding your centre and being able to move calmly towards either side.
The supporting leg carries more of your weight. The other leg becomes progressively lighter, but it does not have to lift at once. This difference is the core of the exercise: a step begins with clear support beneath the body, not with a foot rushing forwards.
- Gaze: Let it rest naturally ahead instead of constantly looking down at the feet
- Knees: Keep them soft and following the toes rather than falling inwards
- Range: Make it small enough that you can stop and return at any moment
Four steps for a calm weight transfer
Practise first without lifting either foot. Each part of the sequence should remain readable; quick swaying from side to side hides the moment when support truly changes.
- 1. Organise the stance: Find even contact with the ground and allow the breath to remain natural
- 2. Begin from the centre: Move the pelvis and trunk together without leading with the shoulder or head
- 3. Complete the support: Stop before the foot rolls or the knee locks
- 4. Check the free leg: Gently test whether the lighter leg could move without a jerk
Add a step only after support is complete
When one leg is clearly supporting you, place the other foot a short step away. Let it touch the ground lightly first; do not send your weight into it at the same instant. This gives you time to check the direction of the foot, the step length and your stability.
Only then transfer weight smoothly into the new stance. A shorter step is more useful for learning than a long reach that makes the trunk stretch or fall forwards. The aim is not distance but a clear order: support, free leg, touch, new transfer.
Pelvis and trunk travel together; the arms come later
For the basic exercise, imagine the pelvis and chest travelling calmly above the feet as one unit. Do not pull the movement with the head, shoulder or hip. The trunk can remain upright without becoming rigid, and the stance height does not need to rise and fall abruptly.
Leave the arms relaxed at first. Once you can repeat three to five transfers with clear support, add a simple arm arc in a smaller range. If the arms hide the information from your feet, leave them out again; in this exercise they follow the organisation of the body rather than replace it.
Common errors and simple corrections
If the trunk sways beyond the support, reduce the distance and slow down. If a knee falls inwards, adjust the direction of the foot and transfer less. If the free foot is difficult to lift, spend a little longer completing the move over the supporting leg.
Practise beside a wall, fixed rail or stable chair if support feels uncertain. You may touch it lightly; this is not a balance test. Stop for sharp pain, dizziness or sudden weakness, and discuss new or persistent symptoms with a qualified healthcare professional.
- Swaying trunk: Reduce the range and move the pelvis with the chest
- Locked knee: End the transfer slightly earlier and keep the joint soft
- Premature step: First check that the other leg is genuinely light
- Too many details: Leave out the arms and watch only support, direction and return
Brief home practice and guided learning in Bratislava
At home, one or two minutes of slow transfer without steps and then a few short steps towards each side are enough. Finish before fatigue or speed makes the technique unclear. Home practice reinforces an element you understand; it does not replace guidance on direction and relationships within a complete form.
In the Tai Chi Bratislava group, weight shifting is taught in small stages without contact or combat training. Current organisational details are shared privately through a personal WhatsApp conversation; the message is no-obligation and is not an online order.
Common questions about weight shifting in Tai Chi
Do I need to transfer one hundred percent of my weight to one leg?
No. At first, a clear difference between the supporting and lighter leg is enough. Choose a range that keeps the foot stable, the knee soft and the return calm.
Should I lift my heel during the weight shift?
For the basic side-to-side exercise, keep both feet fully on the ground. When stepping, the free foot moves only after support is established; whether heel or toes touch first depends on the specific movement.
How do I know the other leg is free?
After the transfer, you should be able to make it lighter without leaning the trunk, jerking or speeding up. If not, shorten the stance and return to shifting without a step.
Should I watch my hands or my feet?
First attend to support beneath the feet and the direction of transfer. Add a simpler arm movement only when you can name which leg is carrying your weight.
How many repetitions should I do?
The number is not the main measure. Make a few slow repetitions towards each side and finish while the movement remains readable, stable and free from unpleasant symptoms.
